College Actions:

(Coordinated by Department of Safety)

  1. Determine from informant: the location of fire or alarm.
 
  1. Response – Alarm only (no flame or smoke)
    1. Department of Safety responds to the scene to investigate the alarm and determine the cause.
    2. If there is no indication of fire, alarm will be reset by the Campus Police Officer. If the alarm will not reset, Physical Plant will be notified.
 
  1. Response – Evidence of Actual Fire
  1. Contact Amherst Fire Department
  2. Department of Safety, Residence Life Staff, Faculty/Staff evacuate the Building.
  3. Once on the scene, the Amherst Fire Chief is in charge of the situation until the fire is extinguished.
  4. The Vice President for Finance and Administration, Chief of Department of Safety, and the Director of Physical Plant will be notified.
  5. Department of Safety will photograph and document damages prior to clean-up. Officers will assist with initial investigation by Fire Department/Sheriff’s Office, as needed.
  6. If fire involves a Residence Hall, the Director of Residence Life will relocate evacuees to Prothro or the gym until it is safe to reenter the affected building.
 
  1. If an academic/administrative building is damaged, the Dean of the College and the Vice President for Finance and Administration will temporarily relocate classes or offices that are affected and insure notification to students and employees.
 
  1. The Department of Safety will ensure personal possessions are secured.
 
  1. Physical Plant will initiate facility clean-up and repair.
 
  1. Department of Co-Curricular Life will provide notification of student victim families. The Dean of the College and Vice President for Finance and Administration will notify faculty and staff victim families respectively.
 
  1. The Office of College Relations will coordinate any media releases that are necessary.
 
  1. Students, faculty, and/or staff in need of counseling services following the emergency will be referred to the Chaplain’s Office, the Health Center or the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) as appropriate.
