Aircraft Disaster

                    Typical Problem:              Aircraft crash into or near building, or elsewhere on the property.

                    Typical Informant:            Student, Faculty, Staff Member, Police Officer.

                    Point Person:                   Chief of Police or Shift Commander

College Actions:
(Coordinated by Department of Safety)
  1. Determine from informant vital information (location of crash, description of emergency, number of injuries).
 
  1. Notify Amherst Sheriff’s Office, Fire Department, and Rescue Squad, as needed. Department of Safety responds to scene to secure the area, assists with evacuation, and render first-aid to the injured.
 
  1. Notify other team members.
 
  1. The Vice President for Finance and Administration will ensure the notification of President and other appropriate college officials.  The Vice President’s Office will notify families, if victims include staff of the College. The Dean of Co-Curricular Life will notify families of students. The Dean of the College will notify families of faculty members.
 
  1. The Department of Safety will coordinate emergency response of other law enforcement agencies, fire and rescue operations.
 
  1. The Director of Health Services will coordinate treatment of any injuries.  The general protocol will include triaging injuries at the College, if possible, and coordinating transports to Lynchburg General Hospital or other appropriate medical facility.
 
  1. The Vice President will coordinate temporary housing and services, if needed.
 
  1. The Department of Safety will photograph and document prior to clean-up and repair.
 
  1. Physical Plant will assess damages to facilities and initiate necessary clean-up and repair facilities.
 
  1. The Office of Co-Curricular Life will be responsible for releasing information of the incident to the student body.
 
  1. Students, faculty, and/or staff in need of counseling services following the emergency will be referred to the Chaplain’s Office, the Health and Counseling Center or the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) as appropriate.
