Shawn Brenneman

I have been calling contra dances since 1999. I began calling when i took a calling workshop led by Tom Hinds, who served as a mentor to me as I got started calling.

I regularly call many dances in Virginian and North Carolina, and I have also called dances in18 other states, including CA, WA, CO, ME, MA, SC, GA, PA, IN.

When I call, my goal is to help create an atmosphere where dancers can best enjoy the music, each other, and the dance. I do this by choosing good dances, teaching them simply, clearly, and quickly, calling in a clear and timely manner, and dropping out when possible to let the music carry the dancers forward. I like to choose a varied and interesting program of well choreographed dances to provide a fun evening.

I enjoy working with the band to help bring the music and dances together. I am also a contra dance musician, and this experience adds to my perspective and makes me a better caller. I play with the band House Red.

I also teach dance classes and workshops from time to time. I enjoy teaching the pre-dance lesson. I like to bring new dancers and contra dancing and music together.
